God Does Not Give You Gifts Of The Spirit To Gratify Your Pride October 24, 2013 |
The Gifts Of The Holy Ghost Are PrivateThe Presidents Of The Church Series: Joseph SmithThe general pattern of God is to endow gifts of the spirit that are manifested in private. Because the gifts are manifested privately, the world in general will not know of these gifts. Joseph Smith identified two gifts that are made visible, the gift of tongues and the gift of prophecy. He said the gift of tongues is the smallest gift but one of the most sought after. The Lord generally delivered His people from danger in quiet without others being aware. When angels appeared to individuals they did it without others knowing. When the Lord Himself came down from heaven, often only people He visited knew. Joseph taught, “The Lord cannot always be known by the thunder of His voice, by the display of His glory or by the manifestation of his power; and those that are the most anxious to see these things are the least prepared to meet them, and were the Lord to manifest His power as He did to the children of Israel, such characters would be the first to say, ‘Let not the Lord speak any more, lest we his people die.’ (Exodus 20:19)”
