All Things Must Fail Except For Charity

Gospel Basics Series: Christlike Attributes

Jesus Christ taught that loving God is the first and greatest commandment. Loving others is the second most important commandment. In reality the first and the second commandment are interrelated, because how you love God is by loving others. Seeking after God and His grace, gives you the strength to love others in a greater way, than if you tried to love others on your own.

Charity is defined as the pure love of Christ. It is a gift of God. The Book of Mormon teaches that without charity, we are nothing and are not fit for God’s kingdom. You receive this gift by asking God for it in prayer.

The Book of Mormon teaches that some of the character traits of charity are these;

  • Long suffering
  • Kind
  • Does not envy
  • Not puffed up
  • Seeketh not her own
  • Is not easily provoked
  • Thinks no evil
  • Does not rejoice in iniquity
  • Rejoices in truth
  • Bears all things
  • Believes all things
  • Hopes in all things
  • Endures all things

It continues by saying “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail.” (Moroni 7:46)

Charity is not a feeling. It is a way of being. It is a decision. A good measuring stick to know how you are coming along in your charity is to pay attention to how you view other people. You become more charitable as you view every person as Heavenly Father’s children and your brothers and sisters and you won’t judge them in your mind. You will have a sincere concern for their eternal welfare and happiness.

Charity leads to action. You increase in charity as you look for opportunities to serve others and to give of yourself.
