Waiting Upon God Teaches You To Rely On Him And Not Yourself

See Alma 32: 40-43

There are at least 5 messages about waiting in these verses. Why is waiting such a powerful principle especially when it can cause so much pain particularly when it is a righteous desire and when it is a promise from God? Waiting can be extremely difficult even soul wrenching. It can be more than what some can bear.

Waiting is a requirement if you want the fruit of the tree of life. For some waiting too long causes a hard heart, which harvests into a host of disastrous outcomes.

There is divine purpose in God causing us to wait, intending that it will cause us to wait upon Him. Check out the links below, they are powerful messages about how patience is a principle of perfection.

Waiting upon God builds faith and character. It also develops charity, which is mandatory to be like God and return to Him. One of the best training methods for us to learn to rely on the Lord is teaching us patience. Learning to rely on God and not yourself is one of the most important skills you can develop in this life. The prophets have said that you should be grateful when you have to wait a long time to receive a blessing.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson in his fireside talk, Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread talks about a personal financial challenge that lasted for years and almost ruined him financially. He acknowledged that he is grateful that direct intervention didn’t happen immediately because it taught him in ways that only an extended grueling challenge could do to teach him to rely on God. I am positive that that experience has made him into the extraordinary powerful apostle that he is.

That is the challenge, you probably don’t see while you are waiting how it is a blessing. But in the future you will be grateful when waiting has earned you greater spiritual power and maturity qualifying you for a greater role and responsibility to be an instrument in God’s hands.
