How To Overcome Temptation?

We Can Control Our Minds

Jesus Christ Topical Guide: Sermon On The Mount Series

Matthew 5: 27-28

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old times. Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

“But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Lust is always a sin, and the world (media) will never teach this. Temptation is not a sin; but when we invite it in and entertain the temptation it becomes a sin. This is the problem with the media. It creates a breeding ground for temptation to flourish and become sin.

Both psychology and the prophets teach that we can only think about one thing at a time. This is reassuring because then we have a guaranteed way to overcome temptation. For example, we can overcome all temptation if we always remember Christ.

Our mind is compared to a stage, and we get to choose what is playing because there is always something playing. If we don’t select the play, the Devil will.

Controlling our minds is very important. In the Final Judgment, we will also be judged by our thoughts. Our thoughts determine almost everything. They determine how we feel and what we understand and then what we do. We are what we think, and it seems to me that our thoughts are the ceiling to what we can become.

For example, if we are light-minded, then our life will be light-minded.
